This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a dare for those in enduring partnerships who appreciate horror films: Settle in with your partner and view Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere on Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but inside Together resides a deep contemplation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a particular energy to their characters, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The plot commences when the couple move from the metropolis to the rural area for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their country house, a storm hits, and the protagonists tumble into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity starts to affect the couple. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The whole movie is a methodically building of scares, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but never too gross) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes during something grotesque). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they masterfully render countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his support system. He fears the idea of completely losing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the kind of problems that come with any relationship a decade in. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply look at your partner and say, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
