Patients Stopping Slimming Injections Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users buying these treatments should be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to original weight within about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically have a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the heightened weight return.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Users who have come off the jabs report a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you become starving," recalled one woman.

The struggle is worsened if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers caution that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural support.
