European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
